HPE ProLiant DL380 G10 Server Full Review

In addition to the new Bezel design and appearance, the HPE ProLiant DL380 G10 server is equipped with Intel’s new upgradable processors, which are equipped with more cores for increased performance, expandability, and scalability.

This platform supports different chassis configurations and has more flexibility to support containers, Cloud, virtualization, and Big data applications.

There are also options such as persistent memory, and persistent storage capacity, which significantly increase system performance for databases and also help in-memory programs such as Oracle and SAP HANA.

Function

This HPE ProLiant DL380 G10 server platform does not support Intel Xeon E5 processors, instead, it is equipped with Intel’s new C621 chipset that supports Intel’s new expandable processors including Platinum 8100 series, Gold 6100 series, and Gold 5100 series, Silver 4100 series and Bronze 3100 series.

Depending on your needs for the number of cores, storage, or both, the new processors support from 4 to 28 cores.

Increasing the number of cores in the HPE ProLiant DL380 G10 server leads to an increase in processing power and more counters or virtual machines, which are supported by different workloads with the same chassis.

The presence of a flexible power slot in the HPE ProLiant DL380 G10 server also allows users to use the right size of power depending on the server configuration, and considering the types of configuration that can be used, this feature is very important to reduce power consumption.

The new generation of power supplies has been upgraded to improve energy efficiency by 94 and 96%.

The cooling system has 4 fans for installing one processor, 6 fans for installing two processors, and 6 high-speed fans (so-called high-performance fans) for systems with a complete set of hard drives and special configurations.

HPE ProLiant DL380 G10 server memory

To achieve higher speed, each processor supports 6 memory channels and 2 memory modules per channel.

Each processor controls 12 DDR4 modules, for a total of 24 RAM modules for 2-processor mode.

If a CPU is installed, only half of the DIMM slots will be usable. HPE G10 servers support RAM speed up to 2666 MT/s but note that RAM speed depends on processor model, RAM type and memory configuration type.

As you know, there are different models of RAM, UDIMM, RDIMM, LRDIMM, and NVDIMM. But note that it is not possible to combine RAMs with different models.

Also, this system supports a maximum of 3 TB of memory when using 24 128 GB LRDIMM RAM modules.

The standard RAM configuration is from 16 to 64 GB per RAM slot, but some configurations, as mentioned, support up to 3 TB of memory. HPE has tested and measured the HPE SmartMemory system to provide the highest level of performance and bandwidth.

Storage

The HPE DL 380 G10 server is extremely flexible and adaptable, with 12 LFF drives installed in the front of the server and using a midplane HD carrier that allows 4 LFF hard drives to be placed inside the server to support 190 TB.

Some drive cages support LFF and SFF hard drives. Below we mention several different chassis configurations that you can use depending on the workload.

Some configurations support Universal Media Bay for optical drives.

Many configurations require optional drive cages that are placed on an expansion riser that includes 6 SFF, 2 SFF, and 3 LFF drive cages.

8 NVMe drives are placed only for SFF chassis. 8 SFF chassis can be upgraded to 16 SFF and 24 SFF chassis.

A 20 NVMe drive also requires an HPE Smart Storage Battery. All chassis have an S100i Smart Array Controller supported by a Software Raid and SATA ports for drives, two of which can be used from M.2 storage on the first riser for additional storage or fast boot up.

Also, network administrators can use multiple HP Smart Array Storage Controllers to have different types of Raid.

There is also a MicroSD card slot behind the server’s power supply. Also, network administrators can install Dual Micro-SD to support failsafe hypervisor.

Development

There are up to 8 PCIe 3.0 expansion slots in the G10 DL380 server.

In order for all 8 expansion slots to be active, two risers are needed, and the second riser requires a second CPU.

Also, the server has 4×1 GbE network cards by default, and an optional HPE FlexibleLOM network card that provides a choice of bandwidth from 1 to 40 GbE or fiber using a PCIe card.

This system supports 5 single-wide GPUs or 3 double-wide GPUs to improve processing speed and run complex animations.

The additional expansion card significantly increases the data input and output speed and supports graphics, professional processing, and additional storage both internally and externally.

Management

G10 servers can be managed using ILO 5.

iLO 5.0 provides remote access to the server using a standard browser.

ILO 5 provides you with new features with a simple dashboard that is continuously updated with a thumbnail image of the system status.

The management chip is originally designed to simplify the boot process and server operation and has the ability to monitor health status and maximum temperature and power.

The ILO Standard version is present on the server by default, but to access more management features, you can easily upgrade the chip by purchasing a license.

Depending on your server management needs, you can use iLO Essentials, iLO Advanced, iLO Advanced Security Edition, and iLO Scale-Out.

It is also possible to use HPE OneView to manage different generations of HPE servers.

Summary

The HPE ProLiant DL380 G10 server has made significant progress compared to the previous generation, and now with the ability to support a more expandable processor family, it can increase performance by 71% and the number of cores by 27%.

Also, HPE DDR4 SmartMemory can increase the data transfer speed up to 2666 MT/s, which is 11% faster than the same DDR4 memory with a speed of 2400 MT/s.

In addition, this server has been upgraded in terms of storage capacity and has the ability to support persistent memory. There is no doubt that HPE’s claim that the world’s best-selling server is better than ever is not an exaggeration.
